Fieldwork Methods

How Sites Were Chosen

Three projects — Xuan brush, decorative brick, and wooden-press oil — were selected according to two criteria: complete production processes, and access to the workers. Each project covers at least one workshop and the village it belongs to.

How Interviews Were Conducted

Semi-structured interviews, covering the production process first and daily life afterwards. Anonymous interviews were audio-recorded only, never filmed.

How Filming Was Done

The guiding principle was not to interrupt the work; long takes were preferred. For physically heavy processes, the scope of filming was explained in advance.
