Process

Field photos → sketches → carving → printing → finished prints.

Stage One: Field Photographs

Every print derives from photographs taken in the field. There, the images are reduced to relationships of black, white, and grey.

Stage Two: Drawing

Working from on-site sketches, I refine the composition — removing detail, keeping structure.

Stage Three: Carving the Block

The blocks are basswood; the fist knife (quandao) cuts the main lines. A carving mistake cannot be undone, so before cutting I trace the draft onto the block with carbon paper.

Stage Four: Printing

Hand rubbing, with an edition of 8–12 prints per block.

Stage Five: Finished Works

Photographs of the finished prints are shown side by side with field photographs; see the pages under Huizhou Architecture Prints.
